What a send-off speech needs

  • Stories from the job, told so the people who were not there still laugh.
  • The career in a few lines, not a CV read aloud.
  • What they leave behind: the habits, the people they trained, the standards.
  • Nothing about age, health or "finally getting rid of them".
  • A good wish for what comes next, and a toast.
From an example retirement speech for a colleague

When I started here in 2009, Linda gave me two pieces of advice. "Never trust the printer on the third floor," and "If a customer is shouting, they are scared." The printer has since been replaced. The second one I have used every week for fifteen years.

Linda answered the phone on the first ring for thirty-one years. She remembered the names of customers’ dogs. And when the system went down on Black Friday 2016, it was Linda who walked the whole team through taking orders on paper, with a smile and a supply of good pens.

How it works

Answer a few questions

Who it is for, how you know them, and two or three stories. About ten minutes. No account needed.

The plan for the speech, its opening lines, and three questions that dig out the detail that makes it land.

Get your speech in a minute

Pay once and watch it being written. Revise it as often as you need, then print cue cards or rehearse with read-aloud.

The manager, a colleague and a friend all speaking?

One order for 3 people speaking at the same send-off, for example the manager, a long-time colleague and a friend or family member; the person leaving can have the last word. You fill in your speech now; each speaker adds their own details later through their own link, and the speeches are coordinated so no story is told twice.

$69 for 3 coordinated speeches, instead of $29 each. Every speech has its own 10 revisions. On the form, choose the occasion and then “Retirement send-off pack: 3 speeches for $69”.

Keepsakes, included

Every speech comes with a keepsake print to frame, cue cards, a large-print script, a folded greeting card and a quote image to share, designed in your browser.

Questions

How long should a retirement speech be?

Three to five minutes for a colleague or manager. If you are the one retiring, five to seven minutes lets you thank people properly without a list of names.

Is it safe for a room of colleagues?

Yes. The writer leaves out jokes about age, health and anyone else's job, and anything that would embarrass the person in front of their team.

Can I add slides?

Yes. Choose Talk + Slides on the form and you get a slide outline that follows the speech, useful for a photo slideshow.

Can I get a receipt for my company?

Yes. Checkout for workplace speeches lets you add your company details. See speeches for work for more.
